Tesco has said that it will accept old round pound coins after they cease to be legal tender on 15th October.
The supermarket giant will allow customers to pay in this way for an extra week. This follows on from Poundland’s announcement that it would be accepting the coins until the end of the month.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We've been updating our systems ready for the new pound coins, but to help customers who still have the old coins, we'll continue to accept round pounds at our tills and self-service machines for an additional week."
New 12-sided £1 coins were released in March, whilst an estimated 500 million of the old ones are thought to still be in circulation.
