Burger King pulls ‘sexist’ World Cup social media campaign

Burger King has apologised for a social media stunt, in which it offered money and a lifetime supply of Whoppers to Russian women who get pregnant by players at the World Cup.

The announcement was made on VK, the Russian equivalent of Facebook, and then swiftly removed after critics labelled it demeaning and sexist. Burger King said in a statement on VK: "We offer apologies for the announcement we made. It was too offensive".

This isn’t the first time that Burger King’s Russia division has indulged in a publicity-baiting social media stunt. Last year it used the likeness of Diana Shurygina, who was raped when she was 16 at a house party, as part of a buy one get one free burger offer.
