Japan leads way as Alipay accelerates footprint across globe

Alipay has released an overseas transaction summary for this year’s Golden Week (1st to 7th October) holiday in China.

More than 300,000 merchants in 55 countries and regions participated in the campaign this year. Japan topped the list of top ten destinations by transaction volume for the first time, with Thailand taking second spot. Cambodia and the Philippines joined the top 10 list for the first time. The UK came in at number ten.

Average total spend per user increased by 15% to about RMB 2,500 (approx. $350). This was highest in Malta, followed by Monaco and Spain. European destinations topped the list in terms of the highest total spend per user. UAE and Japan ranked the highest outside of Europe.
