Walmart takes mobile app adoption lead

Walmart has topped Starbucks and Amazon in a new mobile app adoption study.

Research from Cornerstone Advisors and StrategyCorps reveals that more than 58 million Americans have the Walmart mobile app on their smartphone. Amazon is in second place with 54 million. Uber lands in third (52 million) and Starbucks takes fourth spot (44 million).

The latter has had success in getting customers to load funds onto its app to use for purchase. Among Starbucks customers with the app on their smartphone, 21% say they frequently load funds onto it. Walmart isn't far behind: 20% of its mobile app customers load funds "often."

31% of both young Millennials (21-29) and older Millennials (30-38) have the Starbucks app on their smartphone. That declines to 24% of Gen Xers and just 14% of Baby Boomers. Among young Millennials, 30% have the Walmart app on their mobile phone. That goes up to 36% for older Millennials and Gen Xers. About a quarter of Baby Boomers have downloaded the Walmart app.
