Levi Strauss sustainability veteran Michael Kobori joins Starbucks

Michael Kobori has taken on the role of Chief Sustainability Officer at Starbucks.

He previously spent 22 years at Levi Strauss & Co., holding such positions as Vice President, Sustainability.

“The greatest honour and privilege of my career was spending two decades helping to make this great company and the apparel sector more sustainable,” he says in a LinkedIn post. “I will always, as we say, bleed Levi's blue.”

He adds: “I am humbled to join the green aprons at the iconic Starbucks. I will need a lot of help, advice, and caffeine on my new sustainability journey!”

It’s not easy being green

Starbucks is looking to create 10,000 eco-friendly stores globally by 2025. And in 2016, it announced a FoodShare programme with plans to donate unsold food from 100% of US stores.

The retailer was, however, recently called out by the New York Post for allegedly throwing away boxes of food in Manhattan.
