Odeon cinemas reopen with new self service kiosks

As part of the government’s easing of coronavirus lockdown rules, UK cinemas are now allowed to reopen.

Many of them remain closed, however. Two of the UK’s biggest cinema chains – Cineworld and Vue – were originally supposed to spring back to life from 10th July, but now won’t return to action until the end of the month.

Odeon opened a few locations in England this weekend, although the majority of its venues won’t be operational for another few weeks.

“So glad to be open again! Brand new kiosks running brand new software (this one setup by my own fair hand). Watching the Greatest Showman in Luxe luxury!” Cath O’Neill, Head of IT Service Delivery UK and Ireland at Odeon Cinemas Group, said in a LinkedIn post.

The new software, we should point out, is Vista Cinema. In terms of the delayed opening of many UK cinemas, there’s been speculation that Cineworld, Vue, Odeon et al are erring on the side of caution due to one film, Tenet.

The new movie from Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan, its release was initially slated for 17th July and then pushed back to 31st July when the coronavirus pandemic hit. It is currently due out on 12th August.
