Tesco preps free grocery delivery as it builds Clubcard Plus

Tesco is to add free online grocery delivery to its Clubcard Plus loyalty scheme.

The move closely follows Amazon's announcement that it is offering its Amazon Fresh service to Prime subscribers, giving them free two-hour food delivery slots on orders of more than £40.

Dave Lewis, Tesco Chief Executive, told the Telegraph: "I understand the move (from Amazon). The idea of Prime is very similar to where we are in Clubcard Plus, in terms of bringing a whole bunch of benefits together.”

“So an opportunity into the future for us is to think about how we put delivery into Clubcard Plus. That's always been the direction of travel."

He warned, however, that Tesco has to "make sure that we can match capacity with that (online) demand".

Since the coronavirus outbreak, the retailer has increased its delivery slots from just over 600,00 a week to 1.4 million. It is currently the leader in the UK online groceries space, with a 26% share of the overall market.
