Nostalgia looms large as Woolworths trends on Twitter

Woolworths is trending on Twitter this morning, but cool your boots, fans of top 40 singles and pick n’ mix. The iconic retailer is not about to return to UK high streets.

All 807 Woolworths stores closed between 27th December 2008 and 6th January 2009, resulting in 27,000 job losses. Woolworths Group entered administration on 27th January 2009, and it was officially dissolved on 13th October 2015.

In February 2009, Shop Direct Group purchased the Woolworths trademark and internet address, which continued as a retail website until its closure in 2015, when customers’ accounts were transferred across to Very.co.uk.

After former director Tony Page expressed a wish to buy the Woolworths name from Shop Direct, there was talk of a high street comeback, but alas it was just talk.

Despite being derided by many industry observers for being behind the times, the retailer is much missed by shoppers, if Twitter is anything to go by. Here are a few of our favourite tweets…

#Woolworths is trending. Bought my first ever CD from their shop in St Ives back in 1992. I worked from 4pm to 12am in a takeaway and was on £2.60 an hour. Saw my boss 25 years later and complained about that. He told me I was overpaid. 😆😆
