Magnet Kitchens survey: Covid weary Brits splash out at Christmas

Brits are ready to splash the cash more than ever this Christmas, according to research from Magnet Kitchens.

The retailer surveyed 2,000 UK home owners.

It found that 54% of Brits are planning this Christmas to be the biggest yet, with 18% wanting to make it as memorable as possible by claiming they are ready to spend more money than ever for the big day.

Three quarters of people highlighted that they would be spending Christmas at home, as opposed to going out this year. 28% will be treating their loved ones to a Christmas cake with 64% never having made one before.

Research across Pinterest shows that searches for Christmas cake recipes soared by 6,400% year-on-year.

Similarly, one in four will be brewing a few servings of mulled wine for the first time, with 70% of the population never having made the drink before.

The survey also showed Brits to be ahead of the curve as up to 15% highlighted they started decorating their homes as early as October.

Many also went with the homemade, design led Christmas theme as Pinterest search data showed key terms such as “Christmas decoration inspo” and “Christmas wreath ideas” to be up by 19,900% and 8,800%, respectively, year-on-year.

With 49% of the population highlighting they had saved money over lockdown in 2020 and early 2021, 59% outlined this year to generally feel like a bigger celebration and spend their extra cash by making the house look good as possible for their visitors during Christmas.

A spokesperson for Magnet says: “It’s no surprise that we’re all looking forward to Christmas so much this year but it is intriguing to see just how keen the nation is to make things absolutely perfect, whether that’s a curating a beautiful setting or preparing a decadent meal.”

“This year, we’re thinking about making our own decorations and festive novelties such as the classic Christmas cake. It just shows how eager we are to make 2021 special by adding our own personal touch wherever we can, including food and decorations.”
