Amazon takes Just Walk Out technology to the US suburbs

Amazon is prepping a new Amazon Go convenience store format aimed at suburban shoppers and powered by the e-commerce giant’s Just Walk Out frictionless checkout technology.

The first of these locations, which will offer grab and go foods, beverages and everyday essentials, is set to open in the near future in the Seattle suburb of Mill Creek, Washington.

Amazon will then target the Los Angeles region.

The new stores will line up alongside Amazon's existing fleet of smaller, urban focused Go outlets.

The store in Mill Creek will occupy a 6,150 square foot site, of which about 3,240 square feet will be front of house space.

By comparison, Amazon's first Go location, which opened in 2018 in Seattle, has about 1,800 square feet of retail space.

Meanwhile, in the UK…

As well as its Go offering, Amazon has larger Go Grocery and Fresh stores, also powered by Just Walk Out technology.

In December, its UK arm opened Fresh locations in Euston, Wandsworth and Chingford, London, bringing the total number on these shores to 15.

Other stores can be found in the likes of Camden, Ealing, Wembley Park, White City, Canary Wharf and Dalston.

Opening hours are from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, seven days a week.

Customers use the Amazon app to enter and put their phone away and shop for what they need. At the end of their visit, they can head for the exit, with no need to stand in a queue or check out.

Amazon is planning further openings in the greater London area, with reports suggesting Bankside could be next, although it has not revealed exact numbers or locations.
