Iceland brings Swift convenience stores to London with Wembley opening

Iceland is rolling out its Swift c-store format, and has decided upon London as the next location.

Launched as a single store pilot in Newcastle last year, Swift will extend to four more stores in London over the next few months, with the first one located in Wembley.

Its range covers “the full spectrum of grocery” from frozen and fresh to food-to-go, alcohol and tobacco, a spokeswoman said.

The aim is to “provide a simple, easy to shop food store with the watchwords: fresh, fast, local”, they added.

Amazon Fresh

Last year, Amazon continued its UK convenience store push with the opening of an Amazon Fresh outlet at Wembley Park.

This was the second Amazon Fresh to offer Just Walk Out Shopping tech in the UK, which was pioneered at the Amazon Go offering in the States.

To shop, customers scan the QR code from their Amazon app, buy what they need, and walk out.

Amazon Fresh stores offer the likes of the e-commerce giant’s private food brand ‘by Amazon’.

They also feature an Amazon Hub counter where customers can pick up or return items purchased on Amazon.co,uk.

There are currently 17 of them in London, with more openings planned this year.

“We believe Just Walk Out technology will shape the future of retail,” Amazon said in a recent LinkedIn post.

“We are constantly optimising our systems to work accurately and seamlessly for businesses and their customers.”

“Our team is always developing educational resources and training tools to bring success wherever Just Walk Out technology goes next.”
