Amazon boss Andy Jassy talks cryptocurrency payments and NFTs

Amazon has no plans to add cryptocurrency as a payment option to its retail business, says CEO Andy Jassy.

In an interview with CNBC, he added that it might be possible to sell non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its e-commerce platform and he expects NFTs to continue to grow "significantly."

Cryptocurrencies will become bigger in the longer term, although Jassy himself does not own any Bitcoin.

Last week, fast fashion bug hitter boohoo announced the launch of its first NFT collection.

Phase one of the brand’s move into this space included the launch of NFT education and community building platform @boohooverse on Twitter and Discord, which aims to onboard the female fashion community into Web3 ahead of the first drop.

boohoo ran a competition to support a second phase. This recruited artists in the NFT space to be part of what is pitched as “the biggest female led NFT collection yet”.

The retailer is now giving its audience the opportunity to own their first NFT for free, available to claim online.

Claiming a free NFT access card will give customers access to their own digital artwork (created by female NFT artist, Amy Kilner), and also provide early access to boohoo’s phase two, as well as exclusive offers and discounts.

Jessica Routledge, Head Of Marketing, commented: “We’re delighted to be continuing our journey in the metaverse with our first female lead NFT collection.”

“It’s amazing that we’re able to champion females and support women's creativity and innovation. This is just the beginning of what’s to come for boohoo in the metaverse.”

Kilner said: “It’s inspiring to see large brands jump into the world of Web3 and NFTs, from a creative standpoint.”

“I love that boohoo are using their platform to create positive and empowering opportunities for women across the globe,. In an industry predominantly led by men, it’s a great step forward.”

“I’m really excited to be a part of the journey with them to develop this new space.”
