Etsy offloads pre-loved fashion specialist Depop to resale focused eBay in $1.2 billion cash deal
In a bid to capture younger shoppers and ramp up its resale credentials, eBay is set to acquire secondhand fashion marketplace Depop from Etsy for approximately $1.2 billion in cash.
Depop, based in London, is expected to retain its name, brand, platform and its culture. It was founded in 2011.
"Depop has built a trusted, social forward marketplace with strong momentum in the pre-loved fashion category, and we are confident that as part of eBay, Depop will be even more well positioned for long-term growth, benefiting from our scale, complementary offerings, and operational capabilities," says Jamie Ianonne, Chief Executive Officer at eBay.
"A key C2C driver, fashion represents more than $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume (GMV) for eBay and delivered 10% year-over-year GMV growth in the US in 2025. This acquisition presents an opportunity to advance one of our newest and fastest growing focus categories with a marketplace that complements our existing presence, and enables us to reach a younger demographic across the expanding recommerce landscape.”
“We're excited to welcome the Depop team to eBay, and look forward to building on what makes them unique - their brand, culture and community - to deliver compelling benefits to buyers and sellers."
"We are excited that this transaction allows us to focus exclusively on the compelling opportunity we see in front of us: to grow the Etsy marketplace in ways that matter most to our buyers and sellers," says Kruti Patel Goyal, Chief Executive Officer at Etsy.
"We believe this transaction is a great outcome for our shareholders, and a positive next step for all involved. We are proud of what the Depop team has built - a truly differentiated brand and product, grounded in clear purpose and strong community - becoming one of the fastest growing fashion resale marketplaces in the US. I am confident that Depop is well positioned for its next phase of growth as part of eBay."
Peter Semple, Chief Executive Officer at Depop, comments: "We're thrilled to begin this next chapter with eBay, whose experience in the C2C fashion space and shared belief in people, opportunity, and a more sustainable future positions us to meaningfully accelerate our marketplace in the US and beyond.”
“This transaction is a testament to the significant growth we have delivered as we have evolved our product experience and strengthened our brand's place in the world. We're very grateful to the Etsy team for their partnership in advancing our business and mission to make fashion circular."
RTIH AI in Retail Awards
Depop was among the winners last month at the RTIH AI in Retail Awards, picking up the Online Retailer of the Year gong.
Our 2026 hall of fame entrants were revealed during a sold out event which took place at The Barbican in Central London on Thursday, 29th January and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by award winning comedian, actress and writer Lucy Porter.
In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “According to Amazon’s Andy Jassy: AI is a once in a lifetime reinvention of everything we know, and the largest technology transformation since the cloud.”
“Whether that’s overstating it or not, we're certainly seeing an increasing number of innovative, potentially game changing developments in this space across both traditional and digital retail spaces. And that is reflected in tonight's finalists, who are boosting customer experiences and tackling retailers' painpoints across the likes of physical stores, online, omnichannel, supply chain, and payments.”
“To quote one of our judges: I have to admit, judging these awards was so difficult. So many that would have been worthy winners. And great to see how AI has moved firmly into delivery mode. Firmly into delivering for customers and driving huge innovation.”
Congratulations to our 2026 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended our Thursday, 29th January gathering.
Stay tuned for an indepth review of the awards ceremony in the next edition of RTIH magazine.
