Lekkerland switches on self-checkouts centric Rewe To Go store at new Frankfurt Airport terminal

Yesterday, Lekkerland, a subsidairy of the Rewe Group, opened a new Rewe To Go store at Frankfurt Airport in Germany. This can be found at the new Terminal 3.

It features eight self-checkouts and is open from Monday to Sunday, 5am to midnight.

“With this launch, we are part of one of the most exciting infrastructure projects in Germany. The new Terminal 3 stands for the future, internationality and a modern travel experience. I am all the more pleased that we as Rewe To Go are represented right here,” says Lekkerland’s Michael Mayer-Sonnenburg.

“This location is much more than just a new opening for us. It shows how flexible and relevant modern local supply must be today, exactly where people are on the move. Whether passengers, visitors or the many employees at the airport, we are there when things have to go fast. With fresh products, strong services and a concept that is consistently geared towards convenience.”

Cashierless stores

Last year, Lekkerland opened an unmanned, AI-based REWE To Go pilot store in Terminal 1 at Frankfurt Airport.

This can be found in the public arrivals area on Level 1 in Section B and can be used by visitors, travellers and employees alike.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, the store does not require cash registers or sales staff. Instead, cameras record which products customers take. When they leave, the invoice amount is automatically debited from the cashless payment method that was scanned when they entered. Customers receive the receipt via their smartphone. Accepted means of payment are giro cards, Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Customers can buy fresh snacks such as sandwiches and salads, drinks and coffee specialties as well as ice cream, snacks and confectionery in the 70 square metre location. The range also includes travel supplies and drugstore items such as charging cables and toothbrushes as well as food, which comprises around 570 items.

“Travellers, visitors and employees already have a wide range of options for shopping and eating at Frankfurt Airport. The new Rewe To Go is an innovative addition to our range of around 280 stores, service providers and restaurants,” saud Karl-Heinz Dietrich, Head of Retail and Letting Management at airport operator Fraport.

2026 RTIH Innovation Awards

Physical stores will be a key focus area at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards.

The awards are now open for entries and celebrate global retail technology innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.

Our winners will be revealed at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards Ceremony, taking place at The HAC in Central London on Wednesday, 4th November.

Check out our 2025 winners here.

Our 2025 hall of fame entrants were revealed during a sold out event which took place at The HAC on 16th October and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by award winning comedian, actress and writer Tiff Stevenson.

In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “This is the awards’ fifth year as a physical event. We started off with just 30 people at the South Place Hotel not far from here, then moved to London Bridge Hotel, then The Barbican, and last year RIBA’s HQ in the West End.”

“But I’m conscious of the fact that, to quote the legend that is Taylor Swift, You’re only as hot as your last hit, baby. So, this year we’ve moved to our biggest venue yet, and also pulled in our largest number of entries to date and broken attendance records.”

He added: “This year’s submissions have without doubt been our best yet. To quote one of the judges: The examples of innovative developments across both traditional and digital retail spaces were truly remarkable.”

Congratulations to our winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Tiff Stevenson, and all those who attended our 2025 gathering.
