The Barcode Warehouse teams with Lincolnshire Co-op on self-checkouts roll-out across food stores

The Barcode Warehouse is working with Lincolnshire Co-op on the roll-out of a new self-checkout solution. Lincolnshire Co-op, which operates more than 220 outlets across Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties, including food stores, pharmacies, post offices and travel branches, is expanding self-service checkout options across its food store estate as part of its investment in enhancing customer experience.

Andy Warman, Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer at Lincolnshire Co-op, says: “The introduction of self-checkouts across our food stores represents an important step in enhancing the shopping experience for our customers. Working with The Barcode Warehouse, we have delivered a solution that provides greater convenience, reduces queuing times, and gives customers more choice in how they shop. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to continuing to deliver high standards of customer service and embracing innovation technology that adds value for our communities.”

The Barcode Warehouse has supplied and supported the retailer's in-store technology estate for more than three years. Today, it supplies Point of Sale equipment, handheld devices for stock management and pricing updates, reduced to clear printing solutions and managed services support across the business.

Jason Datt, Head of Retail at The Barcode Warehouse, says: "Retailers are increasingly looking at how technology can remove friction from the shopping journey while helping stores operate more efficiently. Self-checkout has become an important part of that balance, giving customers greater choice and convenience while helping colleagues focus on delivering excellent service where it's needed most."

“Our role goes beyond supplying technology. We work closely with retailers to understand their operational challenges, customer expectations and long-term goals, helping them identify solutions that deliver measurable benefits in-store. Through our long-standing relationship with Lincolnshire Co-op, we've been able to support the roll-out of a self-checkout solution that not only enhances the customer experience but also provides the flexibility and scalability needed to support future store innovation."

Sam Eade, Project Manager at Lincolnshire Co-op, says: “From the initial planning stages to implementation and colleague training, this project with The Barcode Warehouse has been a true team effort. We’re proud of what has been achieved through this fantastic collaboration and it’s rewarding to already see the benefits of faster transactions for customers and more time for colleagues to be available on the shopfloor.”

The deployment also marks the first UK retail implementation delivered under the partnership between The Barcode Warehouse and CCL, a provider of self-checkout and retail hardware solutions, announced last year. The project will see around 155 CCL Z2 21.5" Windows self-checkout units installed across 74 Lincolnshire Co-op food stores, with a further 21 stores set for deployment in late 2026.

2026 RTIH Innovation Awards

Self-checkout solutions will be a key focus area at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards.

The awards are now open for entries and celebrate global retail technology innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.

Our winners will be revealed at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards Ceremony, taking place at The HAC in Central London on Wednesday, 4th November.

Check out our 2025 winners here.

Our 2025 hall of fame entrants were revealed during a sold out event which took place at The HAC on 16th October and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by award winning comedian, actress and writer Tiff Stevenson.

In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “This is the awards’ fifth year as a physical event. We started off with just 30 people at the South Place Hotel not far from here, then moved to London Bridge Hotel, then The Barbican, and last year RIBA’s HQ in the West End.”

“But I’m conscious of the fact that, to quote the legend that is Taylor Swift, You’re only as hot as your last hit, baby. So, this year we’ve moved to our biggest venue yet, and also pulled in our largest number of entries to date and broken attendance records.”

He added: “This year’s submissions have without doubt been our best yet. To quote one of the judges: The examples of innovative developments across both traditional and digital retail spaces were truly remarkable.”

Congratulations to our winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Tiff Stevenson, and all those who attended our 2025 gathering.
