Walmart greenlights tech hiring spree in India

Walmart is set to hire more than 1,000 graduates for technology roles in India.

“One of the things we are doing a differently…We have Walmart Labs, which is e-commerce. And My Group which is global business services. We are trying to be more product-oriented. We have taken whole projects and moved them over to drive the Indian ownership of the product. We think that is helping but this will help even more (in retaining talent),” says Clay Johnson, CIO at Walmart, which has operations in Bengaluru and Gurugram with over 1,800 employees.

“A lot of our Internet of Things work sits in our stores. A lot of those end-to-end products are done here…the sensors and the data are being done here," he adds.

The move comes as Walmart also looks to fill the positions of CFO, Legal Counsel and Compliance Officer at Flipkart. In May, it confirmed that it would pay approximately $16 billion for an initial stake of approximately 77% in the e-commerce venture.
