WWF works with JD.com to promote sustainability in China

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is launching a range of recycling and green packaging initiatives across its business this week as it renews its partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in support of the Earth Hour movement.

By making use of its nationwide in house logistics, the retailer is allowing clothes to be picked up by its customers and distributed to recycling facilities. A similar drive last year collected more than 200,000 items from 47 cities across China, and a total of more than 1 million items of clothing has been collected so far under the programme.

A new addition this year is JD’s partnerships with Mead Johnson Nutrition and Wyeth Nutrition to collect and recycle empty infant formula cans. Some of the cans will be transformed into pencil cases that will be distributed to disadvantaged schoolchildren.

“With its comprehensive in-house logistics network and vast consumer base of more than 300 million customers, JD.com is the priority partner in our efforts to promote sustainability in China,” says Lunyan Lu, Chief Operating Officer, WWF China. “Considering JD’s influence as an industry leader, its commitments and actions help to promote sustainable consumption in China and set a good example for practicing social responsibility in all sectors of society.”
