Giant Eagle, Grabango announce checkout-free stores pilot

US supermarket chain Giant Eagle has partnered with startup Grabango to create a checkout-free bricks and mortar payment experience.

Grabango’s platform uses computer vision and machine learning to track items, so customers can enter a store, shop as they normally would and not have to scan items before leaving. Multiple configurations are being tested at a pilot Giant Eagle store, including an app-based solution and another that allows customers to pay with cash or credit card.

“Giant Eagle has been a fantastic partner on this groundbreaking project,” says Will Glaser, Grabango’s CEO. “We are excited to be announcing our first checkout-free partnership with a major US retailer. Together, we are offering a technology that is seamless and equitable for all.”

Giant Eagle Director of Corporate Communications Dan Donovan adds: “We are committed to advancing technologies that create an improved, stress-free shopping experience for our customers. In Grabango, we have found a partner who shares our commitment and who can help us bring this enhanced experience to life.”
