Coronavirus outbreak turns Brits into green consumers

Brits are actively seeking out more sustainable products and services and rewarding environmentally friendly businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to research from E.ON.

The company surveyed 2,000 people and found that 36% are buying products from companies with strong environmental credentials. A further four in five say they are planning to purchase goods and services from ventures that have made a concerted effort to be eco-friendly.

On average, consumers are willing to pay 3% more for goods that are sustainable, with food and drink at the front of the pack. The increase in demand was most noticeable in London, where 52% said they’d changed their habits in this way. 

The shift was also particularly noticeable among Millennials, with 54% claiming they now buy more from green businesses.

Michael Lewis, CEO at E.ON UK, says: “The coronavirus pandemic has heightened people’s concerns around the climate crisis and this has brought the environmental footprint of the products and services we buy into sharp focus.”
