Lovers have been urged not to leave tokens of their affection on Scarborough Bridge, for fear it will damage the structure.

The ‘love locks’ phenomenon involves people attaching a padlock to a public structure after inscribing it with their names and sometimes a date.

The keys are then thrown away, with the lock symbolising that the relationship is forever.

Why is this a problem?

Scarborough Bridge has a series of metal cables in its design.

The amount of locks attached to these cables has quickly escalated. This could result in damage to the bridge due to extra weight and rusting.

Authorities in Paris have been removing the locks from the Pont des Arts bridge after sections of fencing were damaged by the weight of thousands of locks.

Scarborough Bridge was revamped in 2019, and City of York Council is now asking people to not indulge in the ‘love locks’ phenomenon.
