JD.com scores a first as it accept China's digital currency
Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has become the first online platform to accept Beijing’s homegrown digital currency.
Its FinTech arm, JD Digits, will accept digital yuan as payment for some products on its online mall, as part of a giveaway of the token to citizens of Suzhou, near Shanghai.
According to a report by Reuters, there will be a total of 10,000 winners who will be able to spend the tokens at stores set up with Point of Sale technology capable of handling the central bank digital currency.
The Suzhou lottery kicks of on 12th December - a shopping festival known as Double 12 - and will be trialing functionality of the token, including offline (phone-to-phone) payments.
