Socially savvy Poundland takes down coronavirus chunterers

Poundland stores are continuing to operate their regular hours amid the coronavirus outbreak. Some people are not happy about this and they’ve been kicking off on social media.

Big mistake. The retailer has taken to Twitter to address its critics, or ‘chunterers,’ as it calls them.

Pointing out that it sells food and other essentials like household cleaners, toiletries and pet food, it says: “There are one or two noisy souls who have been countering away all week. They’re a bit steamed up that we’re open and think Britain should now be at Waitrose. Well, respectfully, we’d like to ask them to pipe down a little.”

Poundland also asks the chunterers to stop tweeting the likes of Boris Johnson and Piers Morgan. “We really don’t want others to judge you,” it quips.

Thameslink

This isn’t the first time that Poundland has owned its critics on social media. It once hit out at Thameslink after the rail firm made a snarky comment.

Thameslink had responded to a tweet from a passenger, who posted a picture of a departure board showing train cancellations. It replied: "Very sorry Kevin. Appreciate at the moment the service is less Ferrero Rocher and more Poundland cooking chocolate."

This prompted the latter to tweet Charles Horton, Chief Executive of Thameslink's parent firm Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), stating that it had a "pretty good idea about what great customer service is, but if we ever fall short, perhaps we’ll describe ourselves as a bit Thameslink”.

It added: “If you don’t want to hear from our extremely twitchy legal team, we suggest you remove your tweet.” GTR later apologised and deleted its message.
