BrewDog blasts hypocritical government over 10pm coronavirus curfew
Last week, the UK government announced its decision to shut down pubs and restaurants after 10pm in a bid to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
Critics of the move argued that it would create havoc in an industry which was finally starting to recover from the lockdown of earlier this year.
To add insult to injury, it has now emerged that Parliament’s bars will not be subject to the 10pm curfew or have to gather customers’ details. Facilities serving alcohol on the parliamentary estate are understood to be exempt from the earlier closing time because they fall under the description of “a workplace canteen”.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, this has not gone down at all well with many pub and restaurant owners, including BrewDog, whose co-founder James Watt had this to say on Twitter.
After Barnard Castle I thought the leadership of this country could not become any more hypocritical.

Unfortunately I was wrong.
With so many lives & livelihoods on the line, our country deserves better. https://t.co/8WoINCghpA
Meanwhile, COO David McDowall weighed in with the following.
Once again, we enter a new week, forced into battle to protect a sector that has been scapegoated.

There was no rationale for the 10pm curfew being implemented, with zero scrutiny.
Full closure will be catastrophic for hospitality.
Sector specific support urgently required. https://t.co/8iMl2mLXh2
UPDATE: Parliament has now decided to follow the 10pm curfew imposed on all pubs, bars and restaurants.
Catering facilities will, however, stay open later when debates are still going "to serve food for those still working".
