LÜNING store in Germany deploys Nomitri autonomous shopping tech
Shoppers at the Edeka Center LÜNING Rietberg in Germany are now able to use Nomitri’s smartphone-based checkout system.
To do so, they attach their phone to a holder on their shopping cart. Items are then scanned via the smartphone’s camera. Nomitri’s computer vision powered app also detects incorrect scans.
At the end, customers present a barcode at a designated checkout and pay and leave.
Nomitri and the LÜNING Group went through several test stages before officially launching this month.
Shoppers need a registered LÜNING card to take part. In addition, they must be at least 18 years old.
"We are pleased that our data protection friendly app will save customers at Edeka Center LÜNING Rietberg a lot of time from now on. Especially in the pandemic, at a time when contactless and cashless shopping are in demand, our app will make a positive contribution," says Nomitri Managing Director Trinh Le-Fiedler.
"After the introduction of self-scanning via our handheld scanners, Scanni, we offer our LÜNING customer card users with the Nomitri app another option for quick shopping,” adds Jens Krukenmeyer, Sales Lead LEH at LÜNING Group.
Unlike Trigo (which is working with REWE in Germany), Nomitri doesn’t involve retrofitting and installation of cameras and sensors in a store.
And unlike smart cart solutions from the likes of Caper, it only requires a phone holder be installed on existing carts.
At the same time, however, this approach requires the shopper to scan each item individually, instead of being able to walk in, grab what they want and go.
