Majid Al Futtaim to power Carrefour UAE stores with 100% clean energy

Majid Al Futtaim has inaugurated a 17 megawatt solar park which will provide power to 35 Carrefour stores across Jordan, allowing each to operate entirely on clean energy.

Comprising more than 49,000 solar panels covering an area as large, the solar park, situated in east Amman, Jordan, will generate more than 29 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy in the first year of operation — equivalent to reducing carbon emissions across Carrefour’s operations by 300,000 tonnes over the system’s lifetime, Majid Al Futtaim claims.

Chief Sustainability Officer At Majid Al Futtaim Holding Ibrahim Al Zu’bi comments: “The private sector must prioritise and accelerate its plans to create positive change, which is exactly what we are doing in cooperation with Yellow Door Energy.”

“The entire Majid Al Futtaim ecosystem is geared towards setting the standard for sustainable, responsible, self-sufficient business as reflected by our net positive strategy.”

“We are proud to be opening this solar park in Jordan, giving our valued customers the opportunity to be our partners in realising these ambitions and making change every time they shop from Carrefour.”

The park’s output of clean energy is set to increase to cover 42 stores in the near future.

2021 RTIH Innovation Awards

Carrefour UAE was among the companies who emerged victorious at RTIH’s 2021 retail technology awards.

The awards, sponsored by PMC, StoreSpace, Critizr, Marxent, QVALON and Selazar, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.

We received a record number of submissions this year across 14 categories (you can find a full rundown of the 2021 shortlists here).

Our winners and highly commended companies were announced during an exclusive event that took place in central London last week and was attended by retailers, members of our judging panel, and sponsors.

Carrefour UAE, which was launched in 1995 by Majid Al Futtaim, picked up the Most Innovative Global Retailer gong for a variety of initiatives, including the launch of checkout free store, Carrefour City+.

A first for Carrefour worldwide and situated in Mall of the Emirates, this taps AiFi powered artificial intelligence technology.

Store access and shopping payment is enabled via the MAF Carrefour app. Once inside Carrefour City+, every item picked up by customers is automatically added to a digital shopping basket and the purchase is completed by walking out.
