WHSmith India makes social media female shoppers gaffe
Someone please have a word with WHSmith India’s social media peeps and remind them it’s 2021.
British retailer WHSmith, best known for its frequently tired looking high street stores and rubbish promotions, has over the past few years opened a number of shops in Indian airports.
The offshoot also has a presence on Twitter, Facebook et al and today the social media team posed the question: “Have you ever wondered why we have hard flooring in our stores?”
Apparently it’s because “various studies have revealed that women tend to buy more products if they hear the sound of their heels on the floor”.
Because sexism.
Oh to have been in the room when they came up with and signed off that zinger.
No link to the “various studies” BTW. Funny that.
To add insult to injury, a few days earlier they were imploring us to embrace Zero Discrimination Day and “make an effort to stop inequality and spread love”.
When our products don't discriminate against us, why should we! On #ZeroDiscriminationDay let’s vow to make an effort to stop inequality and spread love.#WhsmithIndia #Whsmith #ZeroDiscriminationDay #ZeroDiscriminationDay2021 #ConvenienceInYourCart #Equality #EqualityCantWait pic.twitter.com/Ry7GNmdoUl

Time for a social reboot, we reckon.
