Amazon CEO Dave Clark catches heat for Prime Day 2021 tweet

Prime Day 2021 kicked off yesterday, with Amazon CEO Dave Clark taking to Twitter to label it his “happy place” and a “great day for customers”.

You can probably guess what comes next…

If only Amazon’s employees could give such positive feedback, the Twitterverse shot back.

“I’m doing my part by pissing into a big gulp cup in the back of my van so I can get these deliveries out in time. I’ll try my best not to slosh urine all over any of the packages,” said Clovis Antifa.

“As a special reward the workers get to go to the toilet twice this week,” quipped chill snowman.

News Guy Marcus commented: “I hope all your employees unionise.” A reference to recent events at an Amazon fulfilment centre in Bessemer, Alabama.

Whilst Mike stated: “Happy place. Easy for you to say with all the money you make. Tier 1 employees on the other hand don’t get a bonus. Greed took that away from us.”

One step away from the top job

Clark has worked at Amazon for almost all of his career. He replaced Jeff Wilke as CEO when he retired earlier this year.

Many industry observers had flagged Wilke as in line to run the whole company if Jeff Bezos ever left.

Now Clark, who helped build the e-commerce giant’s warehouse and delivery network, finds himself one step away from the top job.

GMB

Yesterday, the UK-based GMB union hit out at “the inhumanity of working conditions at Amazon warehouses”, particularly in the run up to shopping events like Prime Day, Black Friday and Christmas.

It said investigations have revealed people being knocked unconscious, breaking bones, and having to call ambulances due to chest pains and breathing problems.

Pregnant workers, meanwhile, have been forced to stand for hours on end, it claimed.

An Amazon spokesperson told RTIH: “Amazon is a safe place to work. Yet again, our critics seem determined to paint a false picture of what it’s like to work for us. They repeat the same sensationalised allegations time and time again.”
