McDonald’s adds Bitcoin and Tether to payments mix in Swiss town
McDonald’s is now accepting Bitcoin as a payment method in the city of Lugano in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland.
A video of someone ordering food on a McDonald’s digital kiosk and then paying for it at a regular checkout with the help of a mobile app was uploaded on Twitter by Bitcoin Magazine.
The Tether (USDT) logo can be spotted next to the Bitcoin symbol on the payment terminal (NB: earlier this year, the city of Lugano announced it would accept Bitcoin, Tether and the LVGA token as a legal tender).
El Salvador
Last year, we reported that McDonald’s was accepting payments in Bitcoin through Lightning Network. But only in El Salvador.
Crypto journalist Aaron van Wirdum broke the news after he visited a McDonald’s restaurant in the country and was presented with a printed QR code directing him to an invoice page on Lightning Network.
El Salvador had recently become the first country to accept Bitcoin as legal tender. Businesses were obliged where possible to accept it as payment.
