Zippin announces launch of third checkout-free airport store

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has opened its first checkout-free store, powered by Zippin.

This is Zippin’s third airport store, with locations at Tom Jobim International Airport (“Galeão”), in Rio de Janeiro and New York’s JFK International Airport.

In Dallas, the firm worked with Puente Enterprises to make the 1,400 square-foot store - the largest in Terminal C - a reality.

It offers more than 900 products: from grab and go snacks to bluetooth headphones.

Shoppers tap their credit card at one of the four turnstiles to enter, select their items and exit the store to make a connecting flight or head home.

“Airports are melting pots of people, cultures, and social norms with one common challenge: getting to their destination on time,” says Krishna Motukuri, CEO and Co-founder, Zippin.

“Making the process as natural as possible can level the playing field for a myriad of cultures that shop differently. Simply checking in with a payment method, taking products and walking out is a universally accessible model of shopping.”

“Eliminating the checkout all together helps retailers remove the friction and ease the stress of traveling to better serve the millions of people moving through airports while increasing their margins at the same time.”

Self-checkouts

In July, Motukuri took to Twitter to have his say on self-checkout technology.

Referring to a CNN Business article, entitled Nobody likes self-checkout. Here's why it's everywhere, Motukuri said: “Nobody likes self-checkout and contrary to what people think, it's not even benefiting retailers. Checkout-free, however, is a different story.”

“Self-checkout simply passes the work of the cashier on to the customer, increasing friction for the customer, which inevitably leads to frustration and errors and MORE work for retailers, in the end.”

“Checkout-free works by removing friction and making retail operations substantially more efficient.”
