Jumbo Supermarkten goes live with Gorillas rapid grocery deliveries
Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo Supermarkten has started a rapid grocery delivery service via a partnership with German startup Gorillas.
The pair are kicking things off in Groningen, Rotterdam and Tilburg.
In the coming weeks, the service will be expanded to the other Dutch cities where the latter is active.
Jumbo will supply a large part of its range to Gorillas, including private label products and some from the La Place brand.
Gorillas also works with Tesco in the UK, and Casino Group in France.
“We will join forces to build better and faster customer journeys for our inner city customers,” Björn Brekel, Manager Digital at Jumbo Supermarkten, said in a LinkedIn post, published during January.
“It’s been a privilege to have shaped the collaboration over the past months together with the Jumbo and Gorillas teams. Thank you to all involved in the journey so far. Let’s win together!”
Funding
Gorillas plans to raise $700 million or more this year and become a profitable business.
In October, it bagged close to $1 billion in a Series C funding round.
This was led by Delivery Hero, and included further investments by existing investors Coatue Management, DST Global, Tencent, Atlantic Food Labs, Fifth Wall, Greenoaks, A*, and new backers G Squared, Alanda Capital, Macquarie Capital, MSA Capital and Thrive Capital.
It came seven months after Gorillas secured $290 million in Series B funding, taking its valuation past the $1 billion mark.
It also closely followed protests over the firm’s treatment of delivery riders and warehouse workers, as well as the departure of senior executives, fuelling criticism of Chief Executive Kağan Sümer.
