Marks and Spencer wraps digital and data solutions hackathon

Across two days last week, M&S hosted its fifth 24 hour hackathon, where 18 teams of over 200 colleagues developed digital and data solutions to opportunities on offer to the retailer.

The event takes place every six months and was powered by the BEAM Academy, the home of all things digital and data learning at M&S.

Conor Rose, Principal Data Strategist within BEAM Academy, says: "This is all about bringing the business together to problem solve in a different way - with ambition, focus, collaboration, learning and digital at the core.”

“A massive congratulations to the colleagues who put themselves forward to take part.”

“The energy and dedication has blown us away and the more we can translate this level of empowerment and innovation beyond the event the better for our business."

In a LinkedIn post, Sharon Peters, Head of Technology - Corporate Functions, who was part of one of the teams, said: “What a great experience, when liked minded but diverse individuals come together they can do truly awesome things. We did that.”

“This team has created an enabler for change. One team of the 18 but we were the peoples’ choice.”

“All the team played more than their part. We were truly 24 hours. Two of the 20 strong team didn’t sleep. Four slept for two hours in the office (office furniture is not hugely comfortable!!)”

She added: “We all learned. We all laughed and we all created memories. But the best part - we will be now creating sustained change for M&S - powered through technology.”

“We are a team and we are going to do this - together. I am so honoured to have led this with - the other Sharon (Lawrence, Head of Region - Human Resources Business Partner). Team - I am beyond proud of you all.”
