Marshall Kay departs RFID Sherpas for new retail technology challenge at Avery Dennison

Marshall Kay has taken on the role of Global Director, Retail Transformation Services at Avery Dennison.

He joins from RFID Sherpas, a retail consultancy which he founded in 2007.

In a LinkedIn post, Kay said: “My new role will let me devote more time to one of my true passions - driving broader adoption of intelligent label solutions.”

“I’d like to thank my good friend John-Pierre (JP) Kamel. He has led RFID Sherpas with me for over a decade, and he is now the firm’s sole Managing Director. It is in great hands.”

He added that the move to Avery Dennison is due to the following reasons:

1) After 15 years, it’s time for a change.
2) He misses being part of a large global team.
3) He can devote more time to “market making” initiatives
4) Kay will now be better positioned to assist companies outside North America

Kay concluded: “RFID Sherpas has achieved everything I hoped it would when I founded it 15 years ago.”

“Helping clients move forward with confidence has always been the mission. Many of the world’s most famous retailers and consumer brands have hired the company to be their trusted advisor.”

“We have worked with some amazing retail executives and functional specialists. RFID Sherpas is a trusted voice within the retail and RFID communities, and it is well positioned to remain so for years to come.”

“My new colleagues at Avery Dennison are terrific.! I’m thrilled to be joining such an accomplished team.”

 L’Oréal pop-up store

L’Oréal recently deployed grab and go technology from payfree in a pop-up store in Düsseldorf, Germany.

It also used RFID tags from Avery Dennison.

Customers passed their shopping bag with beauty products through a u shaped scanning unit at the exit.

The payfree Bag Fast Track solution automatically identified the items in the shopping bag because a RFID tag was attached to each one. Customers then paid via contactless using a card or digital wallet.

“The beauty industry is undergoing drastic change. An increasing number of consumers find products online or on social media, buy them online and easily switch from one brand to another,” said Uwe Hennig, Director Market Development Apparel, Beauty & Food Intelligent Labels EMEA, Australia, and India at Avery Dennison.

“Combining our advances in RFID technology with payfree’s know-how in RFID-based seamless checkouts, we can offer brands a unique solution to satisfy their customers and build brand loyalty.”

“This pop-up shop is all about the immersive brand experience. Our goal is to excite our customers while providing a number of beauty and shopping services,” said Jonas Lischewski, Brand Director at L'Oréal Luxe.

“We want our customers to have a rich, memorable shopping experience. payfree is the perfect partner to achieve that. Their checkout solution requires little space and integrates seamlessly in our store concept.”
