Google Tez payments app racks up 7.5 million installs in a month

A month after going live in India, Google’s mobile payments app Tez has 7.5 million users who have made over 30 million transactions. Rival BHIM’s record of 10 million installs in just 10 days, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi backing, remains intact, but Google’s numbers are nonetheless pretty impressive.

Using NPCI's (National Payments Corporation of India) Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the app lets users link up their phones to their bank accounts to pay for goods in physical stores and online, and for person-to-person money transfers utilising Audio QR. All of which is achieved via a partnership with Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India, facilitating the processing of payments across 50-plus UPI-enabled banks.
