Americans still dig Amazon despite Trump vendetta

The US public doesn’t share President Trump’s negative views on Amazon, according to GlobalData research.

Most dismiss the view that Amazon has monopoly power or is competing unfairly. Two-thirds of the 2,505 people surveyed believe there is no need for an investigation into its dominant position. However, although the 5.4% calling for an immediate investigation is small, 17.1% think that one in the future may be warranted.

When it comes to protecting consumers, 82% say that regulating Amazon is unnecessary. 63.2% of people believe it has no unfair competitive advantage over other retailers. That said, views on this are less decisive than other questions and 22.3% of the public think Amazon is, or might possibly be, competing unfairly.

The majority of people feel the company attained its power and scale by being receptive to demand and giving customers what they want. Well over half think Amazon worked hard to achieve its success, while almost 46% note that the firm is innovative. Only 14.3% hold the view that government lobbying helped Amazon to where it is today.

“There is no doubt that Amazon’s rise has been inconvenient for other retailers and that it has caused disruption. In our opinion, this is the market at work. Ultimately, Amazon’s advance has been a force for good, especially for consumers,” says Neil Saunders, Managing Director, Retail, GlobalData.
