Amazon Go supermarkets set to launch next year

Amazon is working on Amazon Go cashierless supermarkets and pop-up stores.

These could launch as soon as the first quarter of 2020, according to a person familiar with the project.

Amazon is testing a supermarket equipped with Go technology in a 10,400-square-foot retail space in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighbourhood, Bloomberg reports.

Branching out

Last month, we reported that Amazon was looking to bring the technology that runs its Go stores to other retailers.

According to an article by CNBC, citing people familiar with the matter, it was in talks to deploy the underlying tech in OTG’s CIBO Express stores at airports and Cineworld’s Regal cinemas. Another person said Amazon was targeting concession stands in baseball stadiums.

The idea was to start installing the technology in the first quarter of 2020 and have hundreds of stores up and running by the end of 2020. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment on rumours or speculation.
