New Ikea Vienna store will feature trees aplenty and no parking

Ikea has started construction on a seven-storey store in Vienna, Austria that will have no car parking spaces.

Shoppers will have to get there by foot or public transport, with large items delivered to their homes from a nearby logistics centre. There will also be green façades, restaurants, a green roof terrace, and extra open space for customers.

"Consumer behaviour has been changing tremendously over the past years, and so has mobility behaviour," says an Ikea spokesperson. "More and more customers do not even think about carrying home their furniture themselves, they have things delivered home. Online ordering possibilities promote this behaviour.”

Around two thirds of people living in the inner city districts of Vienna do not have cars, the spokesperson adds. They opt instead for public transport, walk, ride bicycles or take a scooter. “Ikea Vienna Westbahnhof serves all these changed behaviours."

The store is slated to open in 2021.
