Nespresso taps blockchain tech for supply chain initiative

Nespresso has launched a blockchain platform that lets people trace their coffee from farms in Zimbabwe through to the company’s production centre in Switzerland.

This is the first time that its AAA Sustainable Quality Programme data, which has been tracing coffee since 2003 as part of its sustainable sourcing model, has been made available to the public using blockchain technology.

The platform has been initially launched for 97 farms in Zimbabwe as part of Nespresso’s Reviving Origins initiative.

Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO at Nespresso, says: “We know that consumers are more and more interested to know where their coffee is coming from. Thanks to our AAA Sustainable Quality Programme, we have had traceability back to individual farms in our value chain for over 15 years.”

“I am pleased that thanks to this blockchain initiative, we can now take it one step further and invite our customers to discover the farmers behind their Tamuka mu Zimbabwe coffee.”
