AMC Theatres launches online cryptocurrency payments

American cinema giant AMC Theatres is adopting cryptocurrencies for online payments.

CEO Adam Aron has announced on Twitter that the company now accepts Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin.

These line up alongside  traditional payment options like Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal.

This already accounts for 14% of AMC’s total online transactions, Aron claimed.

Note that it doesn’t sound like you can use crypto to buy anything in person at a cinema.

And as for payment methods “already accounting for 14% of our total online transactions,” it’s not clear if that number refers to Bitcoin et al or all of the methods listed in Aron’s tweet. AMC didn’t respond to a request for clarification

Dogecoin, meanwhile, will be the next digital currency accepted for online payments at AMC.

Kroger

Earlier this month, America's largest grocery retailer Kroger shut down reports involving its acceptance of cryptocurrency payments.

The US retailer said that a press release stating it would accept Bitcoin Cash at all of its stores, as well as for online purchases, was a hoax.

“This communication was fraudulent and is unfounded and should be disregarded,” it tweeted.

Kroger isn’t a crypto sceptic, however. In 2020, it began to offer Bitcoin rewards through the Lolli platform.

"Our team is continuously looking for more ways to put more Bitcoin in your wallet, and today we are furthering that goal by launching our newest partner, Kroger, which serves over 11 million customers daily,” Lolli CEO and Co-founder, Alex Adelman, said at the time.
