Early front runners for 2021 RTIH retail technology awards
The RTIH Innovation Awards will return later this year, following a barnstorming 2020 where winners included Asda, AO, Co-op, Bitreel, MishiPay and Mercaux.
Over the next few months, we will be flagging up early front runners for the 2021 event. And we’re kicking things off with the Most Innovative Retailer (Rest of World) category.
Amazon took home the gold last year, impressing our judging panel as it adapted strongly to the challenges posed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its existing infrastructure meant it was able to cope with the spike in demand and continue to grow its business.
Moreover, the cleverly timed Prime Day allowed it to own the beginning of the peak discounting period, contributing to the creation of a 10-week ‘Mega-Peak’.
2021
It’s only February and already the e-commerce giant has purchased 11 Boeing 767-300 aircraft as it looks to speed up delivery times for US customers.
It has also expanded its Amazon One palm reading biometric identification system to three more Amazon Go stores in Seattle.
And stepped up its Rivian electric delivery vans trial.
Earlier this week, Amazon Founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, announced that he would transition to the role of Executive Chair in the company’s Q3.
Amazon Web Services Chief Andy Jassy will become CEO at that time.
Bezos goes out on a high note, with Amazon reporting record revenues for its core Christmas quarter, topping $100 billion for the first time as the coronavirus pandemic powered a surge in online shopping.
How will Jassy fare in the hot seat and will he steer Amazon to a second consecutive RTIH Innovation Awards win? Stay tuned for further details. And bank on the likes of Alibaba Group, Walmart, Tesco and Carrefour giving Amazon a run for its money.
