Aldi UK makes a Dogecoin joke and we need no more news today

An Aldi UK customer went viral this week after sharing a picture of a sign he'd spotted in one of the retailer’s stores.

This flagged up a price reduction on packs of Mini Sponge Tarts, which had been marked down from £7,147.03 to 79p.

The aforementioned customer, Daniel Holland, quipped: "Absolutely fuming at the sale in Aldi. That’s a huge discount, I spent £7,000 on those last week."

Cue a barrage of likes, retweets and responses, including Aldi UK making reference to Dogecoin, which was created in 2013 as a joke about the rise of digital assets such as Bitcoin.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. No other retailer does social media better than Aldi UK.

Elon Musk

Earlier this month, Elon Musk made his Saturday Night Live debut.

He mentioned Dogecoin in his opening monologue and, in a Q&A with hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost, called himself the “Dogefather”.

The value of Dogecoin plummeted during the show. Because, as Aldi UK so rightly pointed out, the crypto space be crazy…

“It is the future of currency, it is an unstoppable financial vehicle that is going to take over the world,” Musk declared.

When he stated that crypto can be traded for cash, Che shot back, “Oh, so it’s a hustle”.

“Yeah it’s a hustle,” Musk laughed before shouting the Dogecoin phrase of “to the moon.”
