2023 RTIH Innovation Awards nominee ZERO10 sets sights on footwear as it launches new virtual try-on experience

ZERO10 has launched a new virtual try-on category covering footwear.

Its proprietary technology captures an image of the user’s feet using a camera integrated into an AR Mirror.

Algorithms detect key points on the feet, such as the toes and the heels, to assess the position, rotation, and size of the customer’s shoes. Using this information, virtual 3D shoes are overlaid precisely onto the feet in the image.

To ensure stability and realism, smoothing algorithms eliminate shaking, and an inpainting technique covers the customer’s real shoes so they do not stick out or appear from under the virtual overlay.

This process involves addressing technical challenges such as lighting and footwear shape variations to provide a seamless, realistic try-on experience.

The footwear try-on functionality also features 3D technology advancements. To create realistic virtual footwear, ZERO10 uses photogrammetry to scan physical shoes. This method involves creating a cloud of images that an algorithm assembles into a 3D model.

ZERO10 also lays claim to a unique software approach to optimise the model for real-time rendering.

In a press release, it says: “This streamlined pipeline reduces the duration of the process by about 10 minutes per object, enabling ZERO10 to generate numerous photorealistic models quickly and with minimal effort, therefore facilitating easy scalability and model optimisation.”

“Additionally, a unique ‘pants over shoes’ feature, allowing virtual shoes to be placed under real pants exactly as they would in reality, makes the experience even more realistic.”

ZERO10 was shortlisted in the Digital Transformation Project of the Year category at the 2023 RTIH Innovation Awards.

Our 2023 winners were revealed at a fantastic awards ceremony, which took place at the Barbican Centre in central London.

The event was held on Wednesday, 29th November, maintaining its popular evening format, with a drinks reception in the stunning Conservatory, followed by a Christmas themed three course meal, and awards ceremony in the Garden Room.
