UK grocery retailer Morrisons notches up Too Good To Go surplus food mobile app milestone
Morrisons reports a milestone in its Too Good To Go surplus food partnership. In a LinkedIn post, Rami Baitiéh, CEO at Morrisons, said: “Every second, 80,000 meals go to waste globally. It's a statistic that should make everyone in the food industry pause.”
“When you face numbers of that scale, it is easy to feel that individual action doesn't matter. But at Morrisons, we believe the best way to drive real change is by making it simple, affordable, and rewarding for our customers to make a difference. That is why I'm incredibly proud to share that we have officially saved 4,000,000 meals from going to waste since our partnership with Too Good To Go began in 2019.”
He added: “For those who haven't used it, Too Good To Go is an app that connects people with surplus, unsold food before it gets thrown away. By offering Morrisons Surprise Bags on the app at less than half price, we are ensuring perfectly good, fresh food stays out of the bin while helping households enjoy high quality groceries at a fraction of the cost.”
“Last month, we welcomed Chelsea Kerr from Too Good To Go to our internal event, Teamtalk, and together we celebrated this massive milestone. Behind this achievement is the amazing effort from our colleagues who pack these bags daily, and our customers who step up to rescue them. A huge thank you to everyone involved. To continue this great work, we'll be bringing our new Chilled Surprise Bags, which we're trialing in 25 London stores, to the rest of our supermarkets in the coming months - watch this space!”
M&S
Over 350 M&S Food stores now offer Too Good To Go Surprise Bags made up of surplus bakery products, giving customers the chance to collect food at a reduced price at the end of the day directly from in-store bakeries.
The national launch follows a trial in a select number of locations across the UK and is the latest move in M&S Food’s work to reduce food waste and ensure good food doesn’t go to waste. The Surprise Bags will include the likes of pastries, cookies and bread baked in-store. Each will include three to four products to a minimum retail price of £10.20 for £3.80. Customers can order them through the aforementioned app and collect them Monday to Saturday, one hour before their local store closes.
The partnership sits alongside M&S’s wider Plan A programme to halve food waste by 2030 and to help edible surplus food find its way to a dinner plate.
Lucinda Langton, Head of Sustainability at M&S Food, says: “Too Good To Go is a brilliant example of how we’re turning our commitment to reducing food waste into practical action. By giving customers access to surprise bags of surplus bakery products, we can help ensure more of our food is enjoyed. The response from our trial stores has been outstanding, and this partnership is another positive step towards our goal of halving food waste by 2030.”
Chelsea Kerr, Managing Director at Too Good To Go UK & Ireland, says: “We’re delighted to be partnering with M&S to help make their surplus food available to even more customers across the UK and Ireland. Food waste is a huge challenge, but partnerships like this show how simple it can be for businesses and consumers to take action together.”
“By giving food that might otherwise go unsold another chance to be enjoyed, we’re making it easier for people to save good food while also getting great value. M&S is a much loved brand across the UK, so we’re excited to be working together to make saving food from going to waste a simple and accessible part of everyday life for even more people.”
