Walmart Grocery merges with retailer's main app and website

Walmart is bringing its Grocery and flagship Walmart apps together.

This will take place in phases, with some customers coming onboard immediately, and the former app will be deactivated in the summer.

“Customers love both of our apps, but we know they would like an easier way to shop without having to switch between the two. Imagine making two trips to the store – one for groceries and one for all the other things you need. That would get really old, quite quickly,” says Janey Whiteside, EVP and Walmart Chief Customer Officer.

Over the coming weeks, the retailer will also add Grocery to the Walmart.com desktop and mobile web experiences. Previously, customers shopped for groceries on the grocery website and everything else on Walmart.com. A new look will be introduced for Grocery to closely match that of Walmart.com.

According to Sensor Tower, Walmart’s main app has been downloaded 103+ million times since January 2014 across both iOS and Android. It’s currently the number two app in the iOS App Store’s Shopping section. Walmart Grocery, meanwhile, has seen more than 16 million downloads across iOS and Android during that same period. It’s also ranked further down (30) in the Shopping section on the App Store.
