McDonald's UK stores will not be re-opening next week

McDonald’s UK has thrown shade at the people behind an April Fools’ tweet that circulated yesterday and stated the fast food giant would re-open its restaurants next week.

“Lots of people getting in touch about a certain post circulating tonight. It’s fake, we are not reopening next week and any official announcements would come from this page and would spell the brand name correctly,” it tweeted.

Cue responses from many, many disappointed people, including: “Hopefully you'll start Monopoly again as soon as you reopen. I need this to keep me going!” And our personal favourite: “Whilst you’re here, how long do pots of BigMac sauce dip last for if unopened and refrigerated - asking for a friend.”

Food Drop

McDonald’s recently partnered with tech platform Food Drop to distribute food from its restaurants to food banks and charities across the UK and Ireland.

Prior to shutting up shop due to the coronavirus outbreak, the retailer had closed its seating areas whilst continuing to offer takeaway and drive thru services.  It quickly became clear, however, that “maintaining safe social distancing whilst operating busy takeaway and drive thru restaurants was increasingly difficult,” Paul Pomroy, CEO, McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said in an email to customers.

“The most socially responsible thing we could do to protect our crew, drivers and our customers,” Karl Boyce, Director of Digital, said in a LinkedIn post.

“We will use this time to support our restaurant teams, reflect and bring all our brilliant talent together to think big, so when it is safe to push open doors and start our digital channels back up, we are even better. Be ready.”
