Tesco restores online groceries service following hacking attempt
Tesco’s online grocery website and app are now back up and running, after the retailer was hit by hackers over the weekend.
On Saturday morning, it posted on Twitter: "We're experiencing an issue with our website and app and are working hard to get things back up and running. We apologise for any inconvenience."
Problems persisted throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning..
On Sunday, a spokesperson told RTIH: “An attempt was made to interfere with our systems which has caused problems with the search function on the site.”
“We’re working hard to fully restore all services and apologise for the inconvenience. There is no reason to believe that this issue impacts customer data and we continue to take ongoing action to make sure all data stays safe.”
On Monday morning, meanwhile, the spokesperson emailed us with the following: “Our teams have worked around the clock to restore service, and we’re really sorry to our customers for the inconvenience caused.”
They added that, to manage the initial flow of traffic back to the site, some customers may need to briefly enter a virtual ‘waiting room’, before they can access their accounts.
“This is a planned measure, which we routinely use at peak times to ensure customers have a smooth experience on the site,” the spokesperson commented.
Social media backlash
Tesco receives around 1.3 million online orders every week.
Disgruntled customers vented spleen on social media over the weekend
“I need to edit my shop for tomorrow (currently all it is is a banana). I always edit the shop the day before.... can I get a full refund if your system isn't back up and running? Or do I have to pay £4.13 for one banana,” said one.
Another commented: “Site and app are still down… can’t amend my order for tomorrow… looks like I’ll be getting 7 bottles of Sauvignon Blanc.”
Well, there’s worse things in the world, we guess…
