M.Video-Eldorado Group announces major cloud migration project

Russia’s largest consumer electronics retailer, M.Video-Eldorado Group, has partnered with Yandex.Cloud to fully move customer facing digital products development and operations to the cloud.

Some 70% of the group’s retail operations are already supported by cloud solutions.

Over the next two years, M.Video-Eldorado plans to transfer all of its customer facing products to the cloud, channel investment into development, and scale down its own IT infrastructure to “advance its efficiency and facilitate business growth”.

It says that the move will enable it to “significantly expand the functionality of its key products and services in a quick and cost-efficient manner, as well as implement data analytics at all stages of the decision making process and ultimately make the business more digital”.

Since the start of 2021, the company has increased its use of Yandex.Cloud services threefold.

Expanded capacity for ML development, therefore, has also become possible, enabling it to run about 100 pilots and tests at once.

It uses automation services for container-based development to create new digital products, along with a managed data platform for data collection, storage, analysis and visualisation, ML-based services and serverless computing.

Alexander Sokolovsky, CIO at M.Video-Eldorado Group, comments: “Our absolute priority is to provide the most convenient, functional and seamless services to customers at all stages of their journey, from product search to after-sales support. High service quality is ensured thanks to nearly 100 constantly evolving products.”

“Each month we roll-out more than 100 updates and new features, all while training our algorithms and neural networks that serve to improve the product mix, purchasing process and pricing. Cloud technology is the best and only solution for fostering and maintaining a well running operation in today’s IT landscape.”

He adds: “Today, M.Video-Eldorado is among the Russian market leaders in terms of transitioning to the cloud. The partnership with Yandex.Cloud enables us to reallocate resources in line with our business strategy and invest in development and data science projects instead of ‘flushing’ money down the server’s drain.”

“Just three years ago, 70% of M.Video-Eldorado’s IT budget was spent on supporting servers, licences, etc., with only 30% allocated to products and development.”

“Currently, around 85% of the company’s IT capex is invested in development. Another obvious advantage is the top notch infrastructure with all the necessary tools, which is like a fully equipped kitchen that would make any chef happy.”
