Six sustainable retail initiatives you need to know about
These retailers are at the forefront of the sustainability movement.
1. Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s has introduced a system which allows customers to recycle Polypropylene (PP) film found in several household plastic products.
A trial is underway in 63 of its supermarkets across the north east with full roll-out expected by the end of this year.
2. Iceland
Iceland Foods has joined The Climate Pledge, a public commitment to “go green” launched by Amazon and Jeff Bezos in 2019.
The British supermarket is the first food retailer to sign up.
3. Lidl Sweden
Einride and Lidl Sweden are commencing operation of a warehouse to store electric transport system that has been in development since April of last year.
All electric trucks will operate from Rosersberg outside Stockholm.
Equipped with Einride's control and monitoring software, they will travel 324 km per day, making deliveries to five stores in the Stockholm region, with an average of 104 pallets per store.
4. X5 Retail Group
Russian food retailer, X5 Retail Group, has announced that Perekrestok shoppers can use the supermarket chain’s mobile app to opt out of paper receipts.
They will instead receive e-receipts as part of X5’s Zero Waste initiative.
5. Waitrose
Waitrose has announced a new trial that will redirect surplus farm food to families in need.
This will see it team up with some of its biggest suppliers and food distribution organisation FareShare.
In total, over five million surplus apples, cucumbers, crooked carrots, mushrooms, peppers, sweet baby sprouts and tomatoes will be redirected - aiming to create more than one million meals for vulnerable families across the UK.
