PayTech giant Klarna celebrates a Stateside milestone
Klarna has notched up 20 million US customers.
The buy now, pay later big hitter has doubled its user base since June 2020, and the Klarna app now has four million monthly active US users.
“The rapid growth of Klarna customers in the US speaks to consumer demand for flexible payment options and a more seamless, convenient shopping experience,” says David Sykes, Head of North America, Klarna.
“As people browse and buy across channels, the Klarna app allows them to discover new products and brands while having the ability to shop both in-store and online with interest-free payment options.”
“In the year ahead, we will continue to expand our US merchant base, offering greater opportunities for customer acquisition and engagement.”
Trouble ahead in the UK?
There has been increasing UK political and regulatory scrutiny of buy now, pay later companies in recent times, based around concerns that they tempt consumers to purchase goods they cannot afford.
As a result, Klarna has been on something of a charm offensive, whilst also taking aim at traditional banks and credit card companies.
Earlier this year, for instance, it launched a UK campaign titled #WhyPayInterest.
Running across OOH, online, on social media and in print, this aims to highlight the difference between BNPL products and traditional credit cards, challenging what Klarna calls “outdated business models and products that don’t serve consumers’ best interests”.
