Why addiction app technology could be a sound investment in 2023
The healthcare space is constantly evolving thanks to technology, and one area that is continuing to do so at a rapid rate is that of addiction healthcare.
At present, the best possible treatment for those addicted to drugs or alcohol is a cycle that essentially sees drug intervention, followed by professional treatment in a rehab clinic.
However, we’re beginning to see more and more technology involved in the process, particularly when it comes to smartphone apps.
No particular app has really nailed down the market at present, but the opportunity is definitely there.
Addiction is becoming a more and more common disease across the world, from the fentanyl crisis in the USA, to the millions of people globally who suffer from alcohol abuse. And among the major fallbacks of why people aren’t getting the treatment they need are stigma and cost.
Which is why a number of apps have emerged to try and challenge that.
Of course, they aren’t going to be as effective as seeking professional help.
But if apps can be created, which people suffering from addiction can check in to 24 hours a day, seven days of the week, they can work as a start point for those looking to seek addiction treatment and start the process, as well as work as an aid while in recovery.
Apps such as I Am Sober and Recovery Box are already proving hugely popular with people in recovery and are a solid indicator that there is an appetite for in-depth, useful apps in the space.
And it seems the best way to do this is by developing an app that uses both professional expertise as well as having simple tools for people to track their progress.
Over the coming years we’re undoubtedly going to see more and more of these apps arrive in app stores as more and more people suffer from addictions.
However, it would just take just one to stand above the others and become the prominent figure in the industry, just as you see with other apps in other industries, for example Uber or Tinder.
While this industry is much more serious, the idea that an app can dominate the market is the same, and in the addiction space, there’s just not an offering out there currently that’s helpful enough and can take addiction recovery from home and via an app to the next level.
It’s a gap in the market and one that is certainly destined to be filled over the next few years.
