Alibaba Group basks in Singles’ Day success

Alibaba Group’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival broke records this year, generating $30.8 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV).

The Chinese e-commerce giant has released key stats from the event:

Growth of UK products compared to previous year (in GMV): 105%

In terms of GMV, the UK ranked sixth of all countries and regions worldwide that have sold to China (after Japan, USA, Korea, Australia and Germany

The top ten selling UK brands included Boots, Holland & Barrett, JellyCat, Myprotein, Whittard of Chelsea, Dyson, Tangle Teezer and Crabtree & Evelyn.

Top product categories from UK (cross-border) by number of buyers:

  • Personal hygiene

  • Nutrition supplements

  • Fluffy toys

  • Personal care tools

  • Masks

  • Lotion

  • Instant beverage

  • Auto parts

  • Milk powder

  • Body care

Other noteworthy stats:

  • Number of delivery orders: 1.042 billion

  • Number of brands surpassing RMB100 million in GMV – 237. These include such international brands as Apple, Dyson, Kindle, Estée Lauder, L’Oréal, Nestlé, Gap, Nike and Adidas

Chinese consumers bought the following items within the first hour of 11.11:

  • 1,600 tons of nuts, 38 million litres of dairy products, 400 tons of chocolate, and 1.33 million bottles of cooking oil

  • 2.83 million Canadian coldwater shrimp, 1.37 million Australian steaks, and 140,000 Mexican avocados

  • 1,650 tons of dog food, and 1,050 tons of cat, or the equivalent of one-year worth of food for 90,000 dogs and 58,000 cats, respectively.
